If your U.S.-based company makes outbound sales calls to lead lists, you must comply with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations related to the National Do Not Call (DNC) Registry.
This includes obtaining a Subscription Account Number (SAN), a required step for legally accessing DNC data and scrubbing your lists.
What is a SAN?
SAN stands for Subscription Account Number. Itβs a unique identifier assigned to your organization that confirms your agreement to follow DNC rules. It allows you to access and download lists of numbers on the DNC registry for the area codes you subscribe to.
You must obtain your SAN from the FCC. You cannot obtain one through smrtPhone, but we want to help you with this process, so read on to learn how you can get one.
Although people often associate telemarketing with intrusive sales tactics, even legitimate businesses conducting outbound prospecting calls fall under these regulations, and therefore must obtain a SAN.
Who Needs a SAN?
Any company selling goods or services by phone to individual consumers and doing outbound sales calls, including those using smrtLeads or any similar platform, must obtain a SAN.
Why is a SAN Important?
Itβs required by law for businesses engaging in outbound telemarketing.
It enables you to scrub your lead lists against the National DNC Registry.
Without it, you risk violating FCC rules and incurring penalties.
Where Do I Get a SAN?
You can only obtain a SAN directly from the National Do Not Call Registry via the FCC website:
π Register for a SAN
smrtPhone does not issue or manage SANs, but we can help guide you through the process.
How to Register for a SAN
Follow these steps to create your SAN profile and access DNC list scrubbing:
1. Create Your Profile
Select Register New Users
Complete the Organization Information form:
Business name
Address (city, state, zip)
Phone number
Employer Identification Number (EIN) or Social Security Number (SSN)
Select your function (most smrtPhone users will choose Seller).
Identify a representative for your company
Read and agree to the Certification Agreements
Click Certify to submit your application
π Save your Organization ID and passwords provided at the end of registration.
2. Verify Your Email
Watch for a confirmation email from donotcall.gov
Follow the verification instructions within 7 business days to avoid deactivation
Once verified, your baseline SAN will typically be issued within one business day
Registering Area Codes
The SAN itself is free, but accessing specific DNC list data requires subscribing to area codes:
The first five (5) area codes are free.
Additional area codes require an annual fee (currently $65 per area code per year).
For a full pricing breakdown, see the FTC fee schedule.
To manage area code subscriptions:
Log in at https://telemarketing.donotcall.gov/
Go to Manage/Renew Subscriptions from the left menu.
Click Subscribe to Area Codes or Add Area Codes.
Select the states and area codes you plan to call.
You can always go back and add View Area Codes that are on your profile, and Add Area Codes by going to https://telemarketing.donotcall.gov/ and logging in as a current user.
What to Do with Your SAN
Store your SAN in your company records.
If you're a smrtLeads subscriber, for example, enter your SAN into the platform to enable DNC scrubbing for your lead lists.
β³ Renewal Reminder: You must renew your SAN and area code subscriptions annually.
